FAD on EFL teaching through film

Background

I have chosen to focus on the teaching of EFL through the film media.
To the pupils film is a part of everyday life and a very accessible way of getting their attention. According to Henrik Poulsen film does not only appeal to the intellect but also to your senses.
I find it possible to cover all the acquirements in the National Curriculum when using film to teach EFL in my class.

Research questions

I will be investigating:
·         How can I cover all learning styles when teaching culture through film?
·         How can I cover all skills when using film in teaching?
·         How can I meet the acquirements of the National Curriculum on teaching dialects and sociolects?
·         How can methodology support my teaching when using film as means?

Theory

I will find information about communicative competences, learning styles, and skills teaching in books like Hadfield & Hadfield, Lindsay & Knight, Claus Færch, and at Sprogforum (Karen Lund).
The supporting methodology will be a look into Bruner, Vygotsky and Piaget and their different ways on supporting pupils to learning what they are supposed to and what they are capable of, in other words to maximize their intake (Claus Færch).

Discussion

The National Curriculum has acquirements on speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills abilities, and on communicative competences, and in this FAD I would like to discuss how to meet these through using film in my teaching. Will one or more skills be favoured in the process?
I would also like to discuss how I may use methodology to support my teaching, especially Bruner’s scaffolding, Vygotsky’s ZPD, and Piaget’s “Chest of Drawers”.

In practice

As examples and reference I will use the teaching material we made for Salaam Film & Dialog on the movie “Precious”. I will make lesson plans and use the material to support my teaching of skills, competences, and dialects / sociolects.
In Salaam’s and also on DFI’s homepages there are a lot of good teaching material and I might also use some of that in planning my lessons.
